Where Cheras, Ampang and Kajang Drink and What to Pour at Home

Looking for bars in Cheras, Ampang and Kajang? We found only a few named venues, so this guide, part of the KL occasions and hosting hub, sets out what we could source for each area and a popular bottle for a night in.

This guide follows our guide to Kuala Lumpur’s drinking scene and Part 2 on PJ and Bangsar. Cheras sits southeast of downtown, Ampang lies in eastern Kuala Lumpur, and Kajang is a Selangor town further southeast. We say plainly where our sources run thin, and every bottle suggestion is ours.

Key Takeaways

  • Cheras straddles Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Cheras and Kajang have MRT stations, and Ampang has LRT stations.
  • The few venues our sources name: a craft beer bar in Cheras and a terrace bar in Ampang. We found no named bar in Kajang, but Wikipedia names its satay.
  • Popular choices with our customers: Suntory Roku Gin [700ML] in Cheras, Absolut Blue Vodka [1000ML] in Ampang and Glenlivet Triple Cask Matured [1000ML] in Kajang.
  • Cheras, Ampang and Kajang are all on our same-day delivery list for orders placed and paid before 2PM on working days.
  • Every bottle is genuine, and please arrange a driver if you are drinking.

What the East Side Looks Like on the Map

Start with the map, because these three places do not share one border or one council. According to Wikipedia, Cheras is a suburb and district that straddles the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and Hulu Langat District in Selangor, southeast of downtown, with Ampang to its north and Kajang to its south. It has a mainly Chinese population, and named neighbourhoods include Taman Connaught, Taman Suntex and Batu 11 Cheras.

Ampang is a ward and city district in eastern Kuala Lumpur, and Ampang Jaya, a municipality, lies to its east in Selangor. The old district was split in 1974. Kajang is a town in Hulu Langat District, Selangor, about 22 km southeast of downtown KL. So this is a mix of KL and Selangor, which is why the delivery rules differ a little later in this guide.

Rail matters for a night out. The MRT Kajang Line has stations at AEON-Maluri, Taman Connaught, Taman Suntex and Batu 11 Cheras, and Kajang station is its southern terminus and an interchange with KTM services. On the LRT, AEON-Maluri is on the Ampang Line and Cheras is on the Sri Petaling Line. Ampang Park LRT station serves Ampang Hilir, and the Ampang Line ends at Ampang station. We would rather you take a train or arrange a driver than drive after drinking. With the map set, let us start in Cheras.

Cheras Offers Noodles, Supper Stops and a Craft Beer Bar

Cheras is a big suburb, and the sources we could use name food stops more than bars. One food guide says Yulek Wan Tan Mee is the most popular stop in Cheras. It also names Restoran Sun Ming in Taman Connaught for char siew and roast duck, and Thoulath Maju at Batu 9 Cheras as a popular supper stop for cheese naan. We give no opening hours, because they change, so check before you go.

For a drink out, Wanderlog lists Battle of the Bull at Dataran C180, Batu 11 Cheras, as “a cozy craft beer bar in Cheras” with eight draft taps. That is a directory listing, so check opening details before you go. Beyond that, we found no other named bar in Cheras that we could source, and we will not invent a scene to fill the gap.

If you would rather stay in, Suntory Roku Gin [700ML] is a popular choice with our customers in Cheras, and you can browse the wider Suntory range too. That is our suggestion for a night in, not a claim about how Cheras drinks. Ampang has its own short list, so let us look there next.

Ampang Has a Terrace Bar and a Bottle for Home

Small terrace with a table and two empty glasses in soft evening light

We found no named bar street in Ampang. Wikipedia lists embassies along Ampang Road, pre-war buildings and former tin-mining lakes. Over in Ampang Jaya, the same source says the area is famous for yong tau foo and has Ampang New Village, one of the largest Chinese settlements in the area. For trains, Ampang Park LRT station serves Ampang Hilir, and Cahaya, Cempaka, Pandan Indah and Pandan Jaya stations serve the Ampang Jaya side.

If you are looking for bars in Ampang, the one our sources name is a terrace. Time Out describes The Balcony Bar and Grill, at 241-B Lorong Nibong off Jalan Ampang, as a terrace bar on the second floor of a bungalow, and a quieter alternative to downtown bars. The page may be dated, so check before you go. We found no named live-music pub and no named late-night stop in Ampang, so we leave those out rather than guess.

For a night in, Absolut Blue Vodka [1000ML] is a popular choice with our customers in Ampang. It is a suggestion from our team, not a rule about the area. We found no named bar in Kajang, but Wikipedia names its satay.

Kajang: Satay First, Then the Home Pour

Kajang is a town in Hulu Langat District, Selangor, about 22 km southeast of downtown KL, and Kajang station is the southern terminus of the MRT Kajang Line and an interchange with KTM services. We found no named Kajang bar that we could source, so this is the shortest section of the guide and we are keeping it that way.

What Kajang is known for is food. Wikipedia says the town is widely known as “Bandar Sate”, or Satay Town, with its satay served with thick peanut-chilli gravy and ketupat. It names Sate Kajang Haji Samuri at Medan Sate as a well-known spot. If you are planning a night in after satay, Glenlivet Triple Cask Matured [1000ML] is a popular choice with our customers in Kajang. That is our pick for the home pour, and we make no claim about what Kajang drinks with its satay. Now let us put all three places side by side.

The Three-Place Chart: Area, Scene, Bottle

If you are asking where to drink in Cheras, Ampang or Kajang, this chart is the short answer. The scene column uses only what our sources say, and it is thin in places on purpose. The bottle column shows popular choices with our customers in each area, taken from our completed orders, with no ranking and no figures. Check any venue’s opening details before you go, and look at each bottle’s page for current details.

Area Scene Popular bottle
Cheras Wan tan noodles, char siew and supper stops, plus a craft beer bar listed at Batu 11 Cheras Roku Gin for a Cheras night in
Ampang A terrace bar off Jalan Ampang that Time Out calls a quieter alternative to downtown Absolut Blue for an Ampang table
Kajang Known as Satay Town, with no named bar found Glenlivet Triple Cask for a Kajang evening

Popular choices with our customers are a guide to what people in each area order from us, not a ranking and not a picture of how every household drinks. Once you have picked a bottle, here is how it gets to you.
