Best Bars in Melaka: Hidden Rooms, Rooftops, and What to Pour at the Homestay

A warmly lit melaka bar counter with a row of bottles behind it, set for an evening out

Melaka’s bars worth the walk are a few hidden rooms near the river and two rooftops. Choose one for the night, then send a bottle to your homestay by Standard Delivery in 2 to 5 working days, part of where Malaysia drinks beyond KL.

This guide ranks nine Melaka bars using dated press listings, plus two venues’ own websites. It adds two Nyonya dishes worth ordering before the first drink, and three whiskies for the evening back at the homestay. We are a retailer, so the bottles are what we know first-hand. For the bars we lean on Tatler Asia and The Edge Malaysia, and we name the source whenever only one of them backs a fact. Check each bar’s Instagram or phone ahead before you go, because listings change.

Key Takeaways

  • Melaka’s bar scene is mostly hidden rooms: a speakeasy by the river, a room above a cafe in Kampung Jawa and a no-menu bar at the end of Tofu Street.
  • 1-Altitude and Alto Sky Lounge are the two rooftop picks, each backed by a single source.
  • Ayam pongteh and cendol are the two Nyonya dishes we match with whisky, as our own picks.
  • Three 1000ML bottles for the homestay: Grant’s Triple Wood, Famous Grouse Smoky Black and Singleton Glen Ord 12, each 40% ABV.
  • Melaka orders go by Standard Delivery: RM30 flat rate, 2 to 5 working days, and free above RM1,250 within Peninsular Malaysia.
  • Every bottle is 100% genuine, sourced directly from authorised distributors.

How We Picked These Melaka Bars

A notebook and phone on a table beside a cocktail glass, suggesting a night of checking bar listings

A ranked list is only as honest as its method, so here is ours. We read two Melaka bar guides, the Tatler Asia city guide (23 May 2023) and The Edge Malaysia bar round-up (2 July 2023), plus an older EdgeProp feature (28 January 2020) on the city’s first speakeasy. We put the rooms with the richest sourced detail first, then spread the list across room types, so you are not choosing between nine versions of the same night.

We did not use rating-site scores. We also left opening hours out of this post on purpose. The listings we found disagree with each other and date from 2020 and 2023, so the safest move is to check the bar’s Instagram or give it a call before you set out. Where only one source backs a bar, we say “according to” that source in the text, so you can weigh it yourself.

PN6 and 1-Altitude come from their own websites rather than a press guide. PN6 sits next to Budi because it comes from the same team, and 1-Altitude leads the rooftops. PN6 is the lightest-sourced entry, so treat it that way. With the method on the table, here are the nine rooms in order.

Nine Melaka Bars Worth the Walk

A narrow old-town melaka street at night with a softly lit doorway

Each entry below gives the address as the press listing gives it, one signature fact, and what we would do with that room. The list runs from a river speakeasy to a daytime rice wine bar, so you can mix a hidden room, a hotel bar and a rooftop across one weekend instead of repeating yourself.

The Old Merchant

Brass lion-head door knockers on a dark wooden door of a pre-war shophouse in melaka

The Old Merchant sits at 88, Jalan Kampung Pantai, in a pre-war shop on the west bank of the Melaka River. According to The Edge and EdgeProp, the building was once a 1920s private remittance business, Poh Teck & Co, and the name is still on the white columns in red Chinese characters. According to Tatler Asia, the bar calls itself the first speakeasy in the city, and brass lion-head door knockers mark the entrance. EdgeProp ran the same line in 2020: Melaka’s first speakeasy bar.

Tatler lists cocktails built on soursop, chrysanthemum and chilli, while The Edge Malaysia points to the signature Cendol Melaka, made with rum, Melaka rice wine, coconut milk and “green worms”. EdgeProp names the Chasing Sang Kancil. Our take: start here, because a room with this much history gives the night a shape before the second drink arrives.

Budi

A steep wooden staircase leading up to a softly lit bar room with batik-patterned decor

Budi is at 16, Kampung Jawa, in a room above a cafe that you reach by a steep staircase. Tatler Asia describes Malaysian motifs such as batik, and ingredients that are grown or sourced locally. The drinks follow the same idea: The Belimbing mixes starfruit, lime, kaffir lime leaves, rum and pisco, and The Nenas pairs pineapple with Hennessy cognac.

The Edge Malaysia names the Kedondong as the fan favourite, made with gin, kedondong, asam boi and lime. What to order: one drink named for a local fruit and let the bartender tell you why it works. The staircase is steep, so make this your first stop rather than your last.

PN6 Melaka

A hotel bar interior in melaka with a polished counter and a selection of spirits on the shelves

PN6 is a hotel bar at Liu Men Hotel Melaka, 46-56 Jalan Tokong, Kampung Dua. Its own website calls it the latest offering by the team behind the fan favourite Budi Melaka. The stated focus is classic cocktails and an extended bar menu with craft beers, organic wines and international spirits.

Who it suits: PN6 is the room for a group where not everyone wants a cocktail. A menu that spans beer, wine and spirits gives the table more than one way to order, and the Budi connection is a fair reason to try both in the same weekend.

1-Altitude

An open-air rooftop bar high above a city at sunset with a wide panoramic skyline

1-Altitude Rooftop Bar is on Level 43-45 of ElementX Mall, Jalan Melaka Raya 23, Taman Melaka Raya, Hatten City, 75000 Melaka. According to the venue’s website, it is an alfresco bar at 195 metres above sea level, with a 360 degree panorama of the city, sunset views and night sky views, serving high-end cocktails and beverages.

The venue’s website also lists Mi Bar inside 1-Altitude, described as a lounge with an old Shanghai feel, wood panelled, billed as “The Cigar and Brown Spirits Bar” and holding a humidor of cigars from the Caribbean and Central America. For whisky drinkers: a brown-spirits lounge is a natural fit for a whisky guide, so if your group wants a slow glass after the view, Mi Bar is the part of the building to ask about.

Alto Sky Lounge

A rooftop lounge on a high hotel floor looking out over a city skyline and coastline at dusk

Alto Sky Lounge is on Level 22 of Hatten Hotel Melaka, Jalan Merdeka, Bandar Hilir. According to The Edge Malaysia, “No other bar in Melaka commands the view of the historical city and its coastline as much as Alto Sky Lounge.” The Edge also lists the Love Birds, made with cava, Aperol, a berry shrub and bitters.

This is a single-source entry, so we are quoting The Edge rather than adding detail of our own. Our take: this is the one for the night you want to look at Melaka instead of sitting inside a small room. Pair it with an earlier stop in the old town, and keep the lighter, bubbly drink for the view.

Yù Neighbourhood

A closed door with a small doorbell beside it at the end of a quiet melaka street

Yù Neighbourhood is at 89, Jalan Hang Kasturi, at the end of Tofu Street. According to Tatler Asia, there is no menu: you ring a doorbell to enter, and the bartender builds a drink from the flavours you prefer. Tatler also says reservations are recommended.

How to go: because there is no menu, walk in knowing three flavours you already like, whether that is citrus, smoke or something sweet. Book ahead, as Tatler advises, since a room that works by doorbell is not one to turn up at with a big group. It suits two to four friends who want a drink made for them.

The Sandman

A phone held up on a dark street corner at night, waiting to be collected for a hidden bar

The Sandman is at 32, Jalan Kampung Hulu, Kampung Dua. Tatler Asia calls it a hidden bar that is not easy to find: you call the owner to be picked up from the street. The crowd favourites are whisky sours and clarified Long Island iced teas, according to the same guide.

Why it fits: a whisky sour room is a natural fit for this guide, since it sits halfway between a night out and the bottle waiting at your homestay. Keep your phone charged and your pickup spot clear before you set out.

Tipsy Bridge

A narrow alley in melaka with a glowing neon arrow sign pointing towards a tavern entrance

Tipsy Bridge is at No. 14, Lorong Jabatan, Kampung Pantai. Tatler Asia says the tiny alley entrance is marked by a neon sign with an arrow, which is the cue to look for. The Edge Malaysia calls it a 1960s-themed tavern beside Kampung Jawa Bridge, and names the Soju Special as its signature, made with lime, Ribena, pineapple, gin and soju.

Our take: this is the relaxed stop in the middle of the evening. A themed tavern with a playful signature drink suits the part of the night when the group has settled in and wants something easy rather than something rare.

Sin Hiap Hin

Rows of bottles of locally made rice wine on a shelf in a traditional melaka tavern

Sin Hiap Hin is at 5, Kampung Jawa, behind an iron grill gate. Tatler Asia describes a century-old bar run by Lee Lian Suan, who has worked it for over four decades. The Edge Malaysia calls it Melaka’s oldest bar and mentions locally made rice wines, including a pandan wine at 27% ABV.

Both guides list daytime opening, so we treat it as an afternoon stop rather than a night-out pick. When to go: before dinner, to taste something made locally, then move on to the cocktail rooms above.

That is nine rooms, from a river speakeasy to a daytime tavern. Next, the choice that decides your evening: hidden room or rooftop.

Hidden Rooms or Rooftop for Your Night?

A dim hidden bar doorway at night with a bright city skyline glowing beyond it

Choose by the kind of night you want. The old-town rooms, which are The Old Merchant, Budi, Yù Neighbourhood, Tipsy Bridge and Sin Hiap Hin, reward a slow walk through the Kampung Pantai, Kampung Jawa and Tofu Street area, and a little patience at the door. The Sandman and PN6 sit around Kampung Dua, and The Sandman asks for a phone call first.

The rooftop is the opposite kind of evening. 1-Altitude offers the 360 degree panorama its website describes, and Alto Sky Lounge gives you the view that The Edge Malaysia singles out, with a drink in your hand, and it asks less of you than a doorbell or a phone call does. If your group is split, do the old-town rooms early and finish up high. Where a listing states that you should reserve, as Tatler does for Yù Neighbourhood, book it first and plan the rest around it.

Heading further afield on the same trip? You can also read about how Johor Bahru drinks or Ipoh’s hidden bars on the road south and north. Whichever room you pick, dinner comes first, so the next section looks at two Nyonya dishes that suit a whisky night.

Nyonya Dishes That Suit a Whisky Night

A table of nyonya dishes in melaka, with a bowl of stew and a glass of iced dessert

Melaka cooking is Nyonya (Peranakan) cooking. According to the Wikipedia entry on Peranakan cuisine, it blends Chinese ingredients with Malay and Indonesian spices and techniques. We keep to two dishes with sourced descriptions, and the whisky matches are our own picks, not a technical rule. Treat them as a starting point for the homestay table.

Ayam Pongteh: Salty-Sweet Stew, Smooth Pour

Wikipedia describes ayam pongteh as a stew of chicken or pork cooked with tauchu, which is salted fermented soy beans, and gula melaka. It is usually saltish-sweet. That balance is why our pick is Grant’s Triple Wood. We would reach for an easy, sweet-leaning blended Scotch here, because it sits comfortably next to the sweetness of gula melaka without competing with the saltiness of the beans.

Pour it neat or with a little water, and keep the glass small so the dish stays the main event. If the table is sharing one bottle between several people, this is the dish to pour it with, because the pairing is gentle enough to suit a mixed group.

Cendol: A Sweet Finish for the Last Glass

Wikipedia describes cendol as an iced sweet dessert that contains droplets of green rice flour jelly, coconut milk and palm sugar syrup. You may also meet it in a glass of its own: The Old Merchant’s signature, the Cendol Melaka, takes the dessert into a cocktail with rum and Melaka rice wine. For the plain bowl, our pick is Singleton Glen Ord 12, which we would save for after the meal and sip slowly.

If you want the bottles lined up before the weekend, the next section has all three in one chart, ready to be sent ahead of you to the homestay.

What to Pour at the Homestay

Three whisky bottles on a wooden table in a bright homestay living room

A good Melaka weekend has two halves: the bar night, and the quiet hour back at the homestay when nobody wants to go anywhere. These three 1000ML bottles are chosen for that second half, each at 40% ABV as shown on its product page. If you would like more options at the blended end, we have a longer list of more blended whisky picks.

Grant’s Triple Wood

Grant’s Triple Wood Blended Scotch [1000ML]

Grant’s Triple Wood Blended Scotch is the easy one, and the bottle we would open first. We think of it as a sweet-leaning blended whisky, which is why we matched it with ayam pongteh above. At 40% ABV it works neat, with water, or over ice for the friend who is not a whisky person yet. Put it out when the group arrives and the evening is still getting started. It suits a mixed group, which is what you want while the first plates of food are still on the way.

Famous Grouse Smoky Black

Famous Grouse Smoky Black Blended Scotch Whisky [1000ML]

Famous Grouse Smoky Black is our smoke-forward pick of the three. It is a blended Scotch at 40% ABV, and the name tells you where it leans. Choose it for the quieter end of the night, when the group has eaten and wants something with more character in the glass. If someone at the table liked the whisky sour at The Sandman, this is the bottle that gives them something different to talk about. Pour a small measure first, add a little water if you like, and let the group decide whether they want a second.

Singleton Glen Ord 12

Singleton glen ord 12 years highland single malt [1000ml] available at mr. Chow malaysia
Singleton Glen Ord 12 Years Highland Single Malt [1000ML]

Singleton Glen Ord 12 Years is a Highland single malt, also at 40% ABV, and it is the sipping bottle of the three. We would pour it after the meal, alongside a bowl of cendol. It comes from the Singleton range, which is worth a look if you enjoy it and want to explore a little further.

The chart puts all three side by side. Pairings are our own suggestions, so adjust them to your table.

Bottle Style ABV Pairs with
Grant’s Triple Wood Blended Scotch [1000ML] Blended Scotch 40% Ayam pongteh
Famous Grouse Smoky Black Blended Scotch Whisky [1000ML] Blended Scotch 40% The quieter end of the night
Singleton Glen Ord 12 Years Highland Single Malt [1000ML] Highland single malt 40% Cendol, after the meal

Once you have chosen, the last step is getting the bottles to Melaka, which the next section covers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the nightlife like in Melaka?

The press guides we read point to small hidden rooms rather than one big strip. They highlight a river-side speakeasy, a room above a cafe in Kampung Jawa, a no-menu bar on Tofu Street and a hotel rooftop on Level 22 of Hatten Hotel Melaka.

What are some hidden gems in Melaka?

For bars, The Old Merchant, Yù Neighbourhood and The Sandman are the hidden rooms the guides single out. The Old Merchant is a speakeasy in a pre-war shop by the river, Yù Neighbourhood has no menu, and at The Sandman you call the owner to be collected.

What is a hidden bar?

A hidden bar is a bar without an obvious front door or sign, which you find by ringing a doorbell or making a phone call. In Melaka that means ringing the bell at Yù Neighbourhood or calling the owner of The Sandman.

Is there a rooftop bar in Melaka?

Yes, two. 1-Altitude is an alfresco rooftop bar at 195 metres, according to the venue’s website, and Alto Sky Lounge is on Level 22 of Hatten Hotel Melaka. According to The Edge Malaysia, no other bar in Melaka commands the view of the historical city and its coastline as much.

What should I bring to a Melaka homestay?

We would bring one easy blended whisky, one smoke-forward bottle and one single malt for after dinner: Grant’s Triple Wood, Famous Grouse Smoky Black and Singleton Glen Ord 12. They can be sent ahead by Standard Delivery in 2 to 5 working days.
