About Dewar’s

In 1846 John Dewar opened a merchant shop on Perth’s High Street. By the 1860s he was selecting casks of single malt and grain whiskies to create his own signature blends. In 1881 the brand says it was among the earliest Scotch whisky makers to champion the marrying process, blending whiskies and then returning them to oak casks for a further period of integration. A.J. Cameron, the first Master Blender from outside the founding family in 1897, was the architect of the house style and went on to create White Label. Stephanie Macleod became the seventh Master Blender in 2006.

The blends draw on up to 30 single malt and grain whiskies, with aged reserves from the brand’s five distilleries: Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie, Royal Brackla and Macduff. All the expressions on this page are bottled at 40% ABV. Dewar’s is part of the Bacardi family of brands (Bacardi acquired it in 1998, per Bacardi’s own company history).

White Label

First blended in 1899, White Label is the cornerstone of the brand, crafted from up to thirty single malt and grain whiskies. The brand describes it this way: “Bright citrus, heather honey, and delicate pear rise on the nose. The palate unfolds with soft vanilla fudge, toffee, and toasted oak, before giving way to a finish of herbal freshness and lingering honeyed sweetness.”

12 Years

The brand says the 12 Years uses two-stage ageing, followed by finishing in first-fill Bourbon casks, for “layered vanilla and citrus notes”. Its tasting notes: it “opens with vanilla, citrus, and orchard fruit. The palate is rich and layered, with butterscotch, cereal, and soft spice, leading to a gently smoky finish of oak and honeyed warmth.” Curious how Scotch differs from bourbon? 15 Years

The brand says the 15 Years uses two-stage ageing and offers “a harmonious balance of honey, toffee, and floral spice, with a rich, lingering finish”. Its tasting notes: it is “elegantly layered, opening with honeyed fruit, vanilla, and soft florals. The palate offers green apple, citrus, toffee, and nutty notes, with a silky texture and a gently smoky finish.”

18 Years

The brand says the 18 Years uses a “two-stage ageing process in carefully chosen casks”, with “notes of marzipan, dark chocolate, and rich fruit”. Its tasting notes: “Rich and complex. Notes of honey, toffee, and dark chocolate prevail. Perfumed and floral, nutty and fruity. Lingering creaminess and full-bodied oak mellow into delicate herbal notes.”

8 Years Caribbean Smooth

Each is aged for a minimum of 8 years and finished in hand-selected Caribbean rum casks, according to the brand. Its taste profile: “Crisp apple and vanilla open into layers of brown sugar and molasses, balanced by tropical fruit and toasted coconut, with soft caramel sweetness carrying through to the finish.”

8 Years French Smooth

Matured for at least 8 years and finished in Calvados casks, which the brand calls French apple brandy. Its taste profile: “Crisp apple and bright citrus are enriched with honey and warming cinnamon, leaving a clean, lively finish.”

8 Years Japanese Smooth

Matured for at least 8 years and finished in Mizunara casks, according to the brand. Its taste profile: “Layers of honey and vanilla are enriched by sandalwood and gentle cinnamon spice, creating a whisky that is balanced, elegant, and distinctive.”

8 Years Portuguese Smooth

Aged for at least 8 years and finished in ruby port casks, according to the brand. Its taste profile: “Bursting with ripe stone fruits and juicy red berries, wrapped in creamy vanilla and honey. Balanced, indulgent, and velvety with a lingering sweet finish.”

How to Serve Dewar’s

The Highball is the brand’s signature serve. Legend has it the Original Highball was born in 1892, when Tommy Dewar, in a New York bar, ordered a “ball” of Scotch in a tall glass. The brand now calls itself a pioneer of the Scotch Highball since 1892. For White Label and the 12 Years, the brand also names the Whisky Collins and the Boulevardier. The 15 Years goes into the Right Pal, Gold Rush, Old Fashioned and Highland Spritz, and the 18 Years can be taken neat or in a Rob Roy. Our guides to the best whisky for a Highball in Malaysia and to how to drink whisky cover the practical side.
